Market Comment :
July orders push the backlog over 7,500 aircraft.
The
large commercial jet backlog has passed the 7,500 mark for the first time and for both manufacturers the month-end backlog
was a new record. The large number of orders during the month contributed to the gain but the July ordering peak may be the
last before the end of the year. New orders may be few and far between for much of the rest of the year.
The Large Commercial Jet Backlog :
The second largest monthly backlog gain this year.
The
backlog grew by 217 aircraft in July, taking the total to a new, all-time record. Despite a large backlog gain, Airbus’s
market share of the total backlog nudged up just a fraction to 51% and the European manufacturer now has 151 more aircraft
on the order book than Boeing. July, however, was yet another month of backlog growth for Boeing whose backlog has increased
every month since the start of last year.

Our
monthly order and delivery chart and table. There were orders for 299 new large commercial jets in July and 77 new aircraft
were delivered.
Large Commercial Jet Orders.
The order intake recovered in July.
More
new aircraft were ordered in July than in the entire Second Quarter. This takes the total number of new aircraft ordered this
year to 1,300. Orders have been concentrated on just a few programs this year and the 737 and A320 together account for 62%
of all new aircraft ordered.

Large Commercial Jet Deliveries.
Fewer deliveries in July is just part of a seasonal industry trend.
Just
when deliveries seemed to be picking up, the July total was far less than June. This is not to suggest that production rates
are falling however. July and August delivery figures are invariably lower than June.

General Aviation :
Turbine deliveries soar while pistons continue to slide.
Second
Quarter deliveries of GA aircraft were up on the figure for Q2 of last year but the gain has been fuelled by increased numbers
of turbine-powered aircraft. Business jet deliveries were up 39.3% and turboprop deliveries were up 19.4%. Deliveries of piston-powered
aircraft fell 5.5%.
Aircraft Engines.
Firm-ordered large jets require a total of 15,750 engines.
The
total engine requirement for all large commercial jets on order at the end of July reached a total of 15,750. This is a gain
of nearly 1,350 since the start of the year and over 3,500 since the end of July last year.
